The imposing granite building was originally opened in 1905 as the new home of National Commercial Bank, designed by New York City architects York and Sawyer, both of whom trained in the offices of McKim, Mead and White, one of the most prominent architectural firms in the United States around the turn of the twentieth century. This Beaux Arts style building, in the tradition of the “Temple of Finance”, features colossal engaged columns supporting a triangular pediment, a feature derived from ancient Greek temples, and something that symbolized stability and permanence to citizens of Albany in the early twentieth century. The bank itself traces its history to 1825 as the Commercial Bank of Albany, reorganized in 1865 as the National Commercial Bank.
